Get away from the relentless day to day routine and experience what it is like to live a different lifestyle. Always wondered what it would be like to set sail and live out on the water for a while? Fancy having a break and leaving all the noise and busyness of land life behind? How about waking up in a secluded anchorage, hiking the lesser known trail, trying to catch our own fish, feeling like you are off the beaten track and being a part of a crew sharing in this off-grid UK adventure.

Overview

Come and sample what living off-grid on a boat is like. We will aim to find quite, secluded anchorages, go on lesser know walks, have fires on the beach at night, try and catch and eat some fish and generally step away from day to day life. With only a week, we’ll probably steer clear of any harbour towns and just spend the week anchoring and exploring.

The trip will start in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland, and we’ll probably head north from there either to the Firth of Clyde, Islay and Jura or explore the North Coast of Northern Ireland.

Trip Highlights

  • Hikes ashore
  • Fires on the beach
  • Learning to sail

More Details

Being out on the water is not only a great adventure and an enjoyable time, but it an opportunity to step out of the normal routine. We like to create a space where people can reflect, relax and retreat from day to day lives. Maybe even think about things you haven’t thought about for a long time. It’s just a fantastic opportunity to unwind and have a bit of natural therapy. it’s not as if you have to if you don’t want to, we have just found that it has been a very healing activity to us which is something we like to share.

Whilst onboard everyone is encouraged to take part in sailing the boat and to be a part of the crew. Prepare feel the wind in your hair and take control at the helm. Get involved with the navigation and become a chef in the galley. Imagine yourself as an explorer, disappearing over the horizon to unknown lands where adventure awaits. For more information about crew roles on the boat go to life on board section.

Itinerary

Day 1 :
day 1

On the first day we'll have a safety briefing on the dock and get you guys familiar with the boat then we'll have a meeting about what we want to get out of the week and what the weather is doing, hatch a plan and head out to our first destination.

Day 2 :
Day 2

On the second day we should wake up at anchor and can either head on to another destination or head a shore fore an explore, it depends where we are and what we want to do.

Day 3 :
Day 3

Day 3 will be similar, maybe in addition we could have a small navigation lesson when moving the boat or we could have a fire on the beach in the evening.

Day 4 :
Day 4

Day 4 we'd be aiming for everyone to really know their roles and for the crew to start really feeling like they are involved with the running of the boat. If we have planned for a main hike ashore or a mini expedition, we would probably be engaged with it or arriving at it by now.

Day 5 :
Day 5

We could have a chill day on day 5 and spend some time on a beach or fishing off the boat, or we could go full send and try and get to one last place before we start our journey home.

Day 6 :
Day 6

We'll be getting ready to head back to base in Carrickfergus by this time. If we are far away we'll start the passage back down or if we are closer by we could spend some more time ashore, do a little bit of bushcraft or a hike depending on what everyone fancies.

Day 7 :
Day 7

We'll arrive back in Carrickfergus aiming to be back in our berth by 1400 in the afternoon latest. Then it's time for everyone to pack up and head off back home.

FAQ

Are there toilets aboard?

Yes, we have two heads (toilets) aboard. One electric, à la Japan 😊 and one manual. Marine toilets are a new experience for many people. You need to pump out the bowl when you’ve finished and pump fresh water back in again. Toilet roll should be kept to a minimum, or at least flush after every few sheets.

Do I need to be able to swim?

No, most of the old sailors believed it was better to die quickly if you fell overboard. Swimming would only prolong the agony.

Do I need a lifejacket?

We will provide lifejackets, but see note above about swimming. Please stay on the boat. 😊

Do we need to bring food?

Snacks and a light lunch will be provided aboard, within the package price. Evening meal and breakfast is included within the overnight package. If you have any special dietary requirements, please advise us beforehand, or bring your own food if you wish.

Do we need any previous experience?

No, we will sail the yacht, allowing you to look around you and enjoy the experience.

Will we be trained?

This is not a training course, but we hope that you will learn a few things along the way, even about yourself. If you think sailing could be your new hobby and you want to take it further, we will be happy to advise.

Where do we meet?

We will meet you at the gates to the marina, beside the West Marina Car Park and Windrose Bar, in Carrickfergus. If you require transport, we have a 9-seater VW Transporter and we can collect your group and luggage from anywhere in the region.

Do we need to bring any special clothes?

We would advise bringing a waterproof coat. Climate change is a slow process and Northern Ireland still has twice the rainfall of Spain. ☹ Only soft-soled, non-marking shoes please.

What if I get seasick?

Seasickness normally takes a few hours, so we should be back on dry land before it takes effect. Even Admiral Nelson got seasick, so don’t worry too much about it. If you stay warm, well rested and well hydrated you improve your chances. Anxiety is a factor too, so sit back and enjoy the trip.

Can I come alone?

Yes, but unfortunately we would need to add a 50% surcharge. If you are flexible with dates, you could join another small group or individual.
