Along side the thrill of adventure, we love welcoming people onto the boat and creating a little floating family. There are a lot of elements to running a successful ship and everyone needs to be involved. Not just for the benefit of the boat but for the benefit of the individual too, there is so much to learn and playing a role as part of the crew gives you so many opportunities to grow and learn new skills. So here is some information about what life onboard will be like, the roles we will all fill and what its like to generally live on a boat.
The roles:
Everyday each member of the crew will take on a different role. The 4 main roles are navigator, engineer, cook and cleaner. Of course Gracie and I will be there to help, teach and advise the entire time, but giving each person a role helps us all pull our weight and make sure everything runs smoothly.
The Navigator: I’m sure you can guess what the main aim of this role is to navigate! This is when you get to have a go at creating a route plan and carrying it out. One of us will go through the principles of navigation with you, show you how to use the various charts, equipment and instruments that we have on board and then we’ll work together to carry out the plan we have created, taking the boat to our next destination.
The Engineer: This is where you can learn a bit more about the machinery onboard. Everyday before we set off we’ll do an engine check which the engineer will be responsible for. Then, if there are any bits and pieces of maintenance to do that day, the engineer can be involved in finding a fix and keeping the boat it tip top shape.
The Cook: We all have to eat and being on a boat is not different! We like to share in the cooking and make meal time a real focal point of each day. Some of you may relish that opportunity and others might think “ahh I’m not a good cook!”, but no matter, we have recipes written out onboard that are easy to follow and we’ll have all the right ingredients for you. We’ll also be there to help at any point and we’ll of course be in the cooking rota so we can show you guys some of the delicious dishes we’ve learnt on our travels.
The Cleaner: With a few people living in a small space, if you’re not on top of keeping things neat and tidy it can become quite the mess. So we all have to pitch in and do a bit of cleaning. That’s mainly just a quick tidy up of the galley and saloon, give the surfaces a quick spray and spray in the heads too just to keep everything good and clean. The fairest way to do it is everyone takes a turn and it means we all take care of the space that little bit more.
If there are less or more than 4 people on board we just adjust the roles slightly to accommodate that.
So they are the roles onboard, to find out about what our routines are like and what the sort of things we like to do are go to the life on board section and our activities onboard pages.
